How reflective I am :)
After revising the paper/assignment that I wrote on the very first encounters of this course. I realized that I did not provide my best answer to the questions. It may be due to the fact that I was not that acquainted with the theoretical tenets of reflective teaching. In addition to that, I am also aware that the type of narrative that I used to tell my story as a reflective practitioner can be improved. This time I would like to make an analogy to express my role as a teacher and as a reflective practitioner.
We the teachers are like sports coaches in the sense that we are responsible for the academic and personal growth of our students and trainees in the case of sports. I have always made this type of reflection in which we want them to be successful in life, to have a bright future in which they can reach a high level of autonomy in the discipline they chose to study at the university. However, we as a teacher to make sure that happens, we need to display ourselves as a role model for them. Same way parent does with their kids at home. What happens nowadays is that neither teacher nor parents ponder on those issues or they do not take as seriously as we all should do.
In order to fulfill that imperative goal, I as a teacher must start doing more research about several situations that happen in the classroom so I can in the process try to solve or provide reasonable solutions to academic or disciplinary issues that arise in a normal language classroom. Perhaps, the best tool to achieve and undergo the process of research in education is reflective teaching. We as teachers are also humans and have also the need to think about the mistakes we make and the achievement we obtain in the classroom with our students. In life, we have gone to several difficulties and the only way we can overcome those issues is through reflection, what happens is we sometimes do it a very superficial manner and not in a systematic and more rigorous way as it should be done. For those who want to start in the process of reflective teaching, I would suggest Farrell's framework ( 2016)
To sum up, I consider that we as teachers can improve not only our teaching practices through the process of reflecting but we can also grow professionally. In that way, reflective teaching presents to ourselves as an alternative to overcome classroom issues and as a way to generate awareness in our students about the multiple socio-cultural issues that may mislead our students if they are not critically prepared to make the best decisions for themselves and for the sake of humanity.
